Aisha Tyler was born in San Francisco, California to Jim Tyler, a photographer, and Robin Gregory, a teacher. Tyler was raised by her father after her parents separated and divorced when she was 10 years old. She began attending local improve classes at a young age and attended School of the Arts High School.

After graduating, she went on to attend Dartmouth College, earning her degree in Political Science. It was here she co-founded and sang in a female a cappella group called The Dartmouth Rockapellas. After college, she worked for a short time at a San Francisco advertising firm, but left to begin touring the country to pursue a comedy career, working in clubs doing stand up before moving to L.A. in 1996.

Her start in television began when she took on several small roles in series such as "Nash Bridges," "The Pretender" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm." But it was her job as the host of E! Television's "Talk Soup" in 2001 that brought her into the limelight and then later that year as host of the reality-dating series The Fifth Wheel.

After "Talk Soup" was canceled in 2002, she also left the reality series to start pursuing other projects. She played a role in "Moose Mating" and received an NAACP Image Award. She also wrote, starred and directed the short film "The Whipper."

Tyler began taking some appearance roles in television including starring on "Friends" as a love interest/girlfriend of both Joey and Ross. Other guest spots included "CSI: Miami," "Nip/Tuck," "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and "24." She also appeared in "Mad tv." In 2005, she took a regular on CBS' "Ghost Whisperer" and appeared on "Without A Trace."

She also began to break into the big screen, taking movie roles including "The Santa Clause 2" and "The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause" with Tim Allen and the ".45" and "Balls of Fury." She also starred in "Death Sentence" in 2007 with Kevin Bacon and "Bedtime Stories" in 2008 with Adam Sandler. She will also appear in "Black Water Transit" in 2009.

Tyler also has a career as a writer, contributing to Glamour and Jane magazines. In 2004, she released her first book, Swerve: A Guide to the Sweet Life for Postmodern Girls.

In 1992, Tyler married Jeff Tietjens, an attorney.
