Anthony Kiedis was born to John Kiedis and former wife Margaret Idema. He has two half-sisters and a half-brother. He lived with his mother in Grand Rapids until he was 11 and moved to Los Angeles with his father after then.

At age 15, he met future bandmates Michael Balzary, Hillel Slovak, and Jack Irons while he was a student at Fairfax High School. He attended UCLA for two years before dropping out to form Red Hot Chili Peppers with the rest of the band.

The band was originally named Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem when they played at a band. But they changed their name to Red Hot Chili Peppers after they were asked to play at the same club. Members Slovak and Irons left the group to go back to their original band, What's This?, as they only considered the other as a side project. Cliff Martinex and Jack Sherman joined the band.

Kiedis often battled his demons with drug addictions, one of his main reasons why he dropped out of college. He has been in and out of rehab facilities over the course of years.

He landed several small roles in TV and movie as a teenager in the late 1970s. He used his stage name Cole Dammett, from his actor father's stage name Blakie Dammett. He also appeared in the 1991 film "Point Break" as a surfer and in the 1994 film "The Chase."

In 2004, his memoir "Scar Tissue" debuted at #17 on the New York Times Bestseller List.

He has a son, Everly Bear (born 2007), with ex-girlfriend Heather Christie.
