Born and raised in Virginia, the Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter had attended Longwood University and studied musical theater for a short time before he moved to San Diego.

His first single, "The Remedy (I Won't Worry)," was released in 2003 from his debut album "Waiting for My Rocket to Come." It was also his first Top 40 hit, reaching #14 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

The release of his second major-label album, "Mr. A-Z" for Atlantic Records, in 2005 had brought him another chart entry at the Billboard 200 album chart, debuting at #5. It also earned him a Grammy Award nod for Best Engineered Album Non Classical, and earned his producer Steve Lillywhite a nomination.

He released his third album, "We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.," in 2008. It was certified Gold by the RIAA, selling more than 500,000 copies in the U.S. alone.

He had been married before, which was said to have ended amicably in 2000.
