Jennifer Hudson Biography

Jennifer Hudson, Actress/Singer

Date of Birth: September 12, 1981

Birthplace: Chicago, Illinois

Sign: Virgo

Jennifer Kate Hudson was born September 12, 1981 in Chicago, IL to Darnell Hudson and Samuel Simpson. Hudson auditioned for "American Idol" in Atlanta, GA during its third (2004) season. She received praise from the judges and got through to the semifinals, though she did not make the final round. Randy Jackson put her through to the Top 12 after she was brought back on the wildcard. Hudson was one of the least popular contestants in the first couple of episodes, but after she changed up her song choices she became a favorite to win the whole show. Hudson finished the competition in seventh place.

"Idol" put Hudson in the spotlight, leading her to her big debut film role in 2006's "Dreamgirls" alongside stars Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy. She won the part over "Idol" winner Fantasia Barrino and Disney Channel star Raven Symone. Hudson won several awards for her portrayal of Dreamettes' lead singer Effie White, including a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award. She received special praise from her rendition of Jennifer Holliday's "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" in the film. Since "Dreamgirls," Hudson has also appeared in "Sex and the City: The Movie," where she played Louise, Carrie's trusty assistant dealing with boy issues of her own.

Her upcoming films include 2008's "Winged Creatures" and "The Secret Life of Bees." Hudson has recorded on duets and movie soundtracks, and her own solo debut "Spotlight" is scheduled for a Sept. 30, 2008 release.

Hudson, the third African-American celebrity to be featured on the cover of Vogue magazine, has been dating boyfriend James Payton since 1999. The two currently have no plans for marriage.
