Julia Roberts Biography
Birthdate: October 28, 1967
Birthplace: Smyrna, Georgia
With her mega-watt smile and high-profile personal life, actress Julia Roberts is one of the highest-paid actresses in the world. With Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, People Choice Awards and more, she is one of the few actresses in the world who can attract filmgoers to a movie without the support of a male co-star.
Roberts' breakthrough came in the early 90's when she starred in the romantic comedy "Pretty Woman" opposite Richard Gere. The film grossed \$463 million worldwide.
In 2001, she won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role as the title character in "Erin Brockovich." She also earned Oscar nominations for "Steel Magnolias" and "Pretty Woman."
She has been in 31 films, including "The Pelican Brief," "My Best Friend's Wedding," "Notting Hill," "Runaway Bride" and "Ocean Eleven" and its follow-up movies. Her movies have collectively earned more than \$2 billion.
Roberts topped the annual Hollywood Reporter's power list of top-earning female stars four years in a row beginning in 2002. Her fee for "Pretty Woman" in 1990 was \$300,000 while it was reported that she was paid \$25 million for her role in "Mona Lisa Smile."
She is the first woman to be on the cover of "GQ" magazine and has been named one of "People" magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" eleven different times.
Roberts was born October 28, 1967 in Smyrna, Georgia, to a vacuum cleaner salesman father, Walter Roberts, and a real estate agent mother Betty Lou. Her parents were both involved in theater and co-founded the Atlanta Actors and Writers Workshop in Georgia.
Her parents divorced in 1971 and her father died of cancer when Roberts was ten. Roberts has an older brother, actor Eric Roberts, and an older sister, actress Lisa Roberts Gillan. Roberts mother remarried later and she has a half-sister named Nancy Motes.
Roberts attended Georgia State University and then headed to New York to join her older sister and pursue an acting career. She signed with the Click modeling agency and enrolled in acting classes.
Due to her enormous star power, Roberts personal life has been closely followed by the media. She was briefly engaged to actor Dylan McDermott, her co-star in "Steel Magnolias."
She was also engaged to another co-star, Kiefer Sutherland, whom she met on the set of their film "Flatliners." Sutherland was married at the time but left his wife and children and became engaged to Roberts. Three days before their wedding, Roberts broke the engagement when she learned Sutherland had been seeing a stripper.
Continuing to shock the press, Roberts took off to Ireland with Sutherland's friend Jason Patric.
Roberts made even more headlines in 1993 when she married country music singer Lyle Lovett after knowing him for only three weeks. They remained married for two years before divorcing.
In 1998, Roberts began dating Benjamin Bratt, star of "Law & Order." They dated for several years. Then in 2000, Roberts met Daniel Moder a cameraman on the set of her movie "The Mexican." He was married but the two began an affair. He subsequently divorced his wife, Vera Steinberg Moder, and after the divorce was final he and Roberts were married on the Fourth of July 2002 at her ranch in Taos, New Mexico.
Roberts gave birth to fraternal twins in November 2004, daughter Hazel Patricia and son Phinnaeus Walter. The couple are still married and had another child in June of 2007, son Henry Daniel.
