Streep's first feature film was Julia, but it was for her second film, The Deer Hunter (1978), that she received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The next year she received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Kramer vs. Kramer and won the Academy Award. In 1982, Streep won a best actress Academy Award for her role in Sophie's Choice.
The acclaimed actress holds the record for receiving the most Academy Award nominations, at a staggering fourteen. Streep has earned six Golden Globe Awards, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two Emmy Awards among other achievements.
Streep most recently appeared in the movies Prime, A Prairie Home Companion, and The Devil Wears Prada. For the latter, Streep received her fourteenth Academy Award nomination. The actress's next project, a remake of the hit musical Mamma Mia! is set to be released summer 2008.
Streep also made her mark on the stage. In 1978 she appeared in Tennessee Williams' 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and Arthur Miller's A Memory of Two Mondays. Streep received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress In A Play for A Memory of Two Mondays. In 2001, Streep returned to the stage in a revival of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull.
