Ryan Phillippe Biography

Matthew Ryan Phillippe was born in New Castle Delaware to parents - Susan and Richard Phillippe on September 10, 1974. His mother ran a day care and his father was a chemist. Ryan Phillippe would be the only boy out of four children, growing up with three sisters, Kirsten, Lindsay, and Katelyn. In high school, Ryan Phillippe attended New Castle Baptist Academy, he was on the soccer team and yearbook staff. Instead of partying on Friday nights, he would drive around in his old pick up truck, listening to the tunes of Frank Sinatra. "I had friends, so I wasn't a complete loner, but I was a bit anti-social. High School is so much about groups and I was never comfortable about that. It was almost a phobia." Ryan says, "I was definitely more of a Ducky [the Pretty in Pink character. "I always liked the idea of exploring other personalities and trying to sponge from anyone I found remotely interesting, for whatver reason, negative or positive." Ryan Phillippe says, after he was discovered while getting his haircut in barber shop, soon after moving to New York City, his mother was proud but had a hard time dealing with him being away, "I always used to cry everytime I had to say goodbye. I thought he may never come back." His mother, Susan, says but also adds, "He always liked to do magic shows for the kids I had in day care. Ryan Phillippe would stage little movies with his sisters and the kids. He would dub in music in a way that most kids wouldn't know. He had just never been taught. It came naturally". Ryan Phillippe’s big break would come on the daytime soap opera, "One Life to Live" where he potrayed the first gay daytime soap opera character, Billy Douglas . After his role on "One Life to Live", a few tv guest star roles, and one made-for-tv-movie later, Ryan moved to L.A., grabbing a few roles in two independent flicks, "Little Boy Blue" and "Nowhere". He would also star in the Blockbuster thriller, "I Know What You Did Last Summer", potraying the character of Barry Cox, a young, arrogant jock which didn't have much depth, but Ryan put his heart into the role, "Instead of giving an all American football performance, Ryan Phillippe brings so much heart to the part. You see underneath his veneer into a complex character." Eric Feig (IKWYDLS producer) says about Ryan's performance. Ryan Phillippe did a wonderful acting job which later helped him recieve the roles of Shane O'Shea in 54, a film about the infamous New York City night club, and Sebastian Valmont, in the hit movie, "Cruel Intentions". In "Cruel..", Ryan Phillippe worked with his "I Know..." co-star and close friend, Sarah Michelle Gellar. "Ryan and I are very good friends and have been for 8 years." Gellar says about her friendship with Ryan. The movie also gave Ryan the chance to work with his then girlfriend, now wife, Reese Witherspoon. "They're an inspiration to young love." Gellar would go on to say about the couple. After filming Cruel Intentions, the couple would annouce their engagement and that they were expecting a bundle of joy. "We like being at home and we like being together. I'm not adverse to talking about it, because I'm not ashamed of being in love." Ryan Phillippe says about his relationship with Reese. The couple was wed on June 5, 1999 in Charleston, North Carolina. Ava Elizabeth Phillippe, would be born on September 9, 1999, one day before Papa Phillippe's birthday. Reportedly, rumors were flying around that baby Ava was putting strain on Ryan and Reese's relationship but the couple has assured us that everything is fine and both were very happy in their relationship. Through becoming a father, a husband, and a celebrity Ryan Phillippe has still remained down to earth, "Good, real, normal people with very real problems." Ryan would comment about his family. "Being in Hollywood has made me stronger as a person. I don't know if that's good because I don't know if it's that desirable to strengthen every belief I've got." Ryan replied when asked if and how becoming a celebrity and actor has changed him. But through all the fame, Ryan Phillippe stills finds time for humor and fun, "We're goofy as hell...I mean, we still go out on Halloween dressed as Power Rangers. But we take our work incredibly seriously." Ryan says about him and his friends, Breckin Meyer and Seth Green, but also adds, "I don't hang out with the hip crowd at all. I don't ever go to clubs - it's just not me...Reese and I have friends who are actors and actresses, but we have even more friends who aren't. " He now shares an office and production company in West Hollywood with his two pals. Ryan Phillippe took a break for a bit from the spotlight once Ava was born, but will be back in action in the fall of 2000, where he is slated to star in "Company Man" and "Way of the Gun". Ryan Phillippe also earned his first million dollar paycheck working on the movie, "Anti-Trust" which will be out January 2001.
