Sally Field, Actress Birthdate: November 6, 1946 Birthplace: Pasadena, California Sign: Scorpio Sally Margaret Field is a two-time Academy Award winner, a three-time Emmy Award winner, and a two-time Golden Globe Award winner. She was born in Pasadena, California on November 6, 1946 to Maggie and Richard Dryden Field. Her parents divorced in 1950 and her mother married an actor and stuntman, Jock Mahoney. Field's first role on television was on "Gidge" as the title character in the mid-1960s. After which, she starred in "The Flying Nun" as Sister Bertrille. The role gave her recognition with the public. In 1967, she released a single on Colgems Records with "Felicidad." Her role in "Sybil" earned her an Emmy Award in 1977. In 1977, she had co-starred with Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason, and Jerry Read in "Smokey and the Bandit." The film had been the year's #2 grossing film. Two years later, she starred in "Norma Rae" and won her the Best Female Performance award at the Cannes Film Festival and an Academy Award for Best Actress. In 1995, she won another Academy Award for her role in "Places in the Heart." Her acceptance speech for the award had been very memorable when she said, "I haven't had an orthodox career, and I've wanted more than anything to have your respect. The first time I didn't feel it, but this time I feel it, and I can't deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!" The ending phrase had been misquoted to "You like me, you really like me!" which had been a subject of parodies until now. She had made her first directorial stint for the TV film, "The Christmas Tree" in 1996. Her other directorial work include the feature film "Beautiful" in 2000 and an episode of the TV mini-series "From Earth To The Moon" in 1998. In 2003, she co-starred with Reese Witherspoon in the comedy film "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde" as Representative Victoria Rudd. It rated #21 in Entertainment Weekly's Top 25 Worst Sequels Ever Made. In March 1986, she appeared on the cover of Playboy magazine, where she wore the classic leotard and bunny ears. She had no pictures inside the magazine although she was interviewed for the issue. She had supporting roles in 1993's Mrs. Doubtfire, which starred Robin Williams, and Forrest Gump in 1994, where she played Tom Hank's mother. From 2000 to 2001, Field had a recurring role in ER as Dr. Abby Lockhart's mother, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. That role won her an Emmy Award in 2001. In 2006, she got the role of the matriarch Nora Walker in TV drama "Brothers & Sisters." The role was previously given to Betty Buckley but the producers decided to take the character in another direction. Field won another Emmy in 2007 for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama series for the role. Field had been married twice, first to Steven Craig in 1968. They had two sons together, novelist Peter and actor/director Eli. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1975. Her second marriage was to film producer Alan Greisman. They had a son named Sam. They divorced in 1993. |
