Biography

Seth Rogen is a Canadian actor, comedian, producer, screenwriter, and director. His career began when he started performing as a stand-up comedian in his teen years. He even won the Vancouver Amateur Comedy Contest in 1998 when he was just 16 years old. After struggling to find acting jobs that would last longer than a few months, he finally landed his Hollywood breakthrough as a writer for Da Ali G Show and his career blossomed from there.

Seth Rogenís Early Life

Seth Rogen was born in Vancouver, British Columbia on April 15, 1982. Rogen has described his parents Mark and Sandy (Belogus) Rogen as Ďradical Jewish socialists.í They met on an Israeli kibbutz and felt very strongly about raising their son to be a faithful Jewish boy. Rogenís mother was a social worker and his father worked for a few different non-profit organizations. His dad was also an assistant director of a Workmenís Circle, which is an American Jewish fraternal organization.

Rogen attended Elementary School at Vancouver Talmud Torah and went on to Point Grey Secondary School. At the age of 12 he began his comedy career by enrolling in his first comedy workshop. During his high school years he was recognized for his stand-up comedy and became quite well known for the performances he gave on stage at Camp Miriam, a Jewish camp that he attended on school vacations. Rogen ended up dropping out of high school to focus on his comedy career.

Eventually he began performing stand-up comedy at small parties and bar mitzvahs, but eventually shifted more to bars and night clubs. When he was 13 he co-wrote the first draft of the screenplay for Superbad with his childhood friend Evan Goldberg. After winning the Vancouver Amateur Comedy Contest at age 16, Rogen landed a part on the television show Freaks and Geeks after he attended a local casting call. Around this time his mother quit her job and his father lost his, which forced them to put their house on the market.

The Beginning of Seth Rogenís Career

At this time, the Rogenís headed to Los Angeles where Seth began working as an actor and became the bread winner for the family at just 16 years old. He began work on the show Freaks and Geeks which aired in 1999. Unfortunately, since it was the lowest rated NBC show that season, even though it received good reviews, it was cancelled by studio executives. Producer Judd Apatow was so impressed with Rogenís improvisational skills on the show that he chose him for the lead in an upcoming series called Undeclared. That show was also short lived and was cancelled after only one season.

Rogen found small roles in the 2001 film Donnie Darko and Anchorman in 2004. Also in 2004 he became one of the staff writerís for Da Ali G Show, a satirical comedy show created by Sacha Baron Cohen. He and the rest of the writers on the show earned an Emmy nomination for their work. 2005 brought a big part for Rogen. He played one of Steve Carellís hilarious co-workers in The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Not only did he star in the film, but he also co-produced it and improvised all of his own dialogue. His part received mixed reviews, and he followed it up with a small role in the 2006 comedy You, Me and Dupree starring A-listers Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson, and Matt Dillon.

Seth Rogenís Big Break

Apatow came through for Rogen again when he cast him as the lead in his new feature film Knocked Up in 2007. He starred opposite Katherine Heigl in the dramedy about the repercussions of an unplanned pregnancy due to a one-night stand. The movie was a smash at the box office grossing over \$200 million. Later that year Rogenís screenplay for the movie Superbad became a reality and he played a supporting role in that film as well. The film, and Rogenís writing, were highly praised and the movie topped the box office two weeks in a row.

In 2008 Rogen was very busy with projects including a voiceover role in Horton Hears a Who!, co-writing Drillbit Taylor, another voiceover role in Kung Fu Panda (which grossed over \$600 million at the box office), as well as co-writing and starring in Pineapple Express. Later on that year he also co-wrote an episode of The Simpsons, entitled ďHomer the Whopper,Ē and he lent his voice to the show also. A role in the romantic comedy movie Zack and Miri Make a Porno was his final project in 2008.

He voiced one of the characters in the animated movie Monsters vs Aliens in 2009 and starred in the film Observe and Report that year too. He joined with producer Judd Apatow again later in 2009 when he starred in Funny People, a comedy that also featured actor Adam Sandler. In 2011 Rogen and Evan Goldberg teamed up again to write the script for The Green Hornet. Rogen also was the executive producer on the film and he starred in it. Although critics gave the film poor reviews, it did debut at number one and ended up grossing over \$225 million.

Late in 2011 he reprised his role for Kung Fi Panda 2, and he also had a supporting role in 50/50, a film that he also produced. In 2012 he starred opposite Barbara Streisand in the comedy The Guilt Trip. 2013 brought Rogenís debut as a director, along with pal Evan Goldberg, for the film This is The End, which Rogen starred in as well. In early 2014 he starred in the movie Neighbors, and his next directing project The Interview (also with Goldberg) is expected to hit theaters in the fall of this year.

Seth Rogen Personal Life

Rogen is married to writer Lauren Miller. He is active in charities that benefit Alzheimerís Disease because his mother-in-law has been affected by it for many years. He is also a very open marijuana user and is an active member of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. He is an activist for gay rights as well.

Seth Rogen has dominated the Hollywood scene in recent years, showing up on television shows, in feature films, and also doing a lot of behind the scenes work. Known best for his comedy, Rogen is sure to appear in many more films before his career is over, and perhaps we will see him take on some more serious roles. Itís also a safe bet that you will be seeing a lot more of Rogen behind the camera as well as in front of it.
