A letter written by Britain's Princess Diana claiming Prince Charles was plotting to kill her has been shown at the inquest into her death. The note - which she wrote to her then butler Paul Burrell in October 1993, 10 months after her split from the Prince of Wales - spoke of her fear that she would be murdered so Charles could marry her sons Princes William and Harry's former nanny, Tiggy Legge-Bourke. Although Charles was romantically involved with Camilla Parker Bowles at the time - who he had an extra-martial affair with while married to the princess and has since married - Diana was convinced it was Tiggy he was in love with. She wrote, "I am sitting here at my desk today in October, longing for someone to hug me and encourage me to keep strong and hold my head high." "This particular phase in my life is the most dangerous - my husband is planning 'an accident' in my car, brake failure and serious head injury in order to make the path clear for him to marry Tiggy. Camilla is nothing but a decoy, so we are all being used by the man in every sense of the word." However, friends of Diana - who died in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997, with lover Dodi Fayed - insisted she had never expressed fears for her life and suggested Burrell could have forged the letter. Lucia Flecha da Lima, the wife of the former Brazilian ambassador to London told the jury at London's High Court: "Paul Burrell was perfectly capable of imitating Princess Diana's handwriting. I don't believe she was fearing for her life, especially from Prince Charles, the future king of your country." Meanwhile, it was also revealed Diana was taking the contraceptive pill while she was with Dodi, squashing reports she was pregnant at the time of her death. Deborah Gribble, who worked on the yacht owned by Dodi's family, said she saw a half-empty strip of the birth control pills in the princess' cabin while undertaking housekeeping duties on two of the three Mediterranean cruises Diana took with Dodi. Speaking via video-link from New Zealand, Gribble said, "Yes, I believe there were pills in the pack." Gribble also said it was "apparent" the couple were sleeping together, adding, "They were clearly having a relationship and were a couple." Dodi's father, Mohamed Al Fayed, has always insisted the couple were murdered by the British establishment because Diana was pregnant and they were about to announce their engagement. |
