Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the spiritual guru to the Beatles, died Tuesday at his home in Vlodrop. The Maharishi became famous in the 1960s when he introduced the Beatles to meditation. During the Beatles era, he was often photographed sitting cross-leged on a deerskin, with a garland of flowers around his neck while sporting a scraggly beard.
Maharishi, who is believed to have been in his 90s, is credited with introducing transcendental meditation to the West. A cause for his death was not given.
In addition to being considered a famous hippie guru, Maharishi was also an entrepreneur and a monk. His introduction of transcendental meditation met with much criticism. The technique consists of closing your eyes twice a day for 20 minutes while silently repeating a mantra which helps gain deep relaxation, eliminates stress and promotes good health, clear thinking and inner fulfillment.
