Aretha Franklin didn't feel R-E-S-P-E-C-T from Beyonce at the Grammy Awards. The "Queen of Soul" was offended when the 26-year-old entertainer called Tina Turner the "Queen" while introducing Turner on stage. "I am not sure of whose toes I may have stepped on or whose ego I may have bruised between the Grammy writers and Beyonce. However, I dismissed it as a cheap shot for controversy," Franklin says in a statement through her rep. The apparent offensive remark took place at the Grammy's on Sunday night. As they were about to perform together, Beyonce introduced Turner to the stage saying: "Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, historical women who have performed on this stage. But I knew I needed all the elements, like the beat of Donna Summer, the spirit of Mahalia Jackson, the jazz of Ella or Nancy." "Lena Home, Anita Baker, Diana Ross, Gladys, Janet, and the beautiful melodies of Whitney. The legacy they have bestowed are simply irreplaceable. But there is one legend who has the essence of all these things: the glamour, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent. Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for the Queen." And from there Turner had entered the stage. Franklin, although slighted, says she has no hard feelings for Beyonce. "I thank the Grammys and the voting academy for my 20th Grammy and love Beyonce anyway." She had been honored 2008 MusiCares Person of the Year. |
