"Vampires Suck" Star Jenn Proske Talks Spoofing "Twilight"

November 30, 2010 Kristen Stewart, Skin, Jenn Proske

"Vampires Suck" is the latest from the guys who unthankfully brought us "Date Movie, "Epic Movie," and pretty much every big-screen spoof the past few years. In "Vampires Suck," now on Blu-ray and DVD, they take on the increasingly ridiculous "Twilight" series, including Edward's disco ball glittering skin and Jacob's transformation to menacing Chihuahua.

But while the movie was expectedly slammed, star Jenn Proske hit all the right notes as Becca Crane, the object of affection of both Edward and Jacob's characters. She picked up all of Kristen Stewart's tics and great reviews for her first major film role (one review was titled "Vampires Suck ....(Jenn Proske Doesn't)." Proske talked to CNS about watching the "Twilight" films over 100 times, sporting lingerie on screen, and even jello wrestling.

CNS: The movie doesn't actually stray too far from the Twilight films because… they can be pretty ridiculous on their own.

Jenn Proske: Yeah, I think "Vampires Suck" was created for "Twilight" fans most of all because it does stay pretty closely to the storyline and the characters and they're the ones who'll get every little joke and reference.

CNS: You guys are spoofing some pretty iconic characters. How was the response from "Twilight" fans to the movie?

JP: It was amazing. It was really positive. Kristen's character is iconic and a huge phenomenon right now. There was a lot of pressure and I worked really hard to imitate her vocal patterns and her mannerisms with a comedic twist.

CNS: How did you prepare for that? Did you study the movies?

JP: Oh yeah. I watched "Twilight" and "New Moon" probably over 100 times, no joke. When I was on set, I had the movies on an iPod and I'd watch them all the time. I really wanted to do her justice.

CNS: What would you say if Kristen Stewart came up to you and said, "Hey, I saw how you portrayed me in that movie"?

JP: I would tell her I'm a huge fan. I had the opportunity to meet some friends of hers and everyone says she's got a fantastic sense of humor. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. We weren't trying to bash anything. We did "Twilight" with a twist and made it a little more funny.

CNS: To be in a Jason Friedberg, Aaron Seltzer movies, it looks like you have to be down for anything. What is it like working with those guys?

JP: They're amazing. They're the nicest guys and they work really hard. I think you have to be 500% committed and throw yourself in the most ridiculous situation. I'm not afraid to laugh at myself or look stupid. I think it's all about committing so much to not caring about looking stupid.

CNS: I'm guessing your parents saw the movie and your bedroom scene.

JP: They knew about it going into it. (Laughing) I was freaking out when I booked it and knew I'd have to be in lingerie. I took a picture of myself in it and sent it to my family to get the awkwardness out of the way.

CNS: It says there's an unrated extended edition. What can fans expect more of?

JP: I know there's a couple bits and scenes that didn't make the cut of the movie in theaters. I do think there'll be jello wrestling in the extended version.

CNS: So "Vampires Suck" is hitting Blu-ray and DVD just in time for the holidays. It would make the perfect gift for…

JP: "Vampires Suck" would make the perfect gift for teenagers, "Twilight" fans, for kids…

CNS: For kids?

JP: For anyone who wants to have a good laugh!

"Vampires Suck," in an unrated, extended edition complete with deleted scenes and gag reel, is available now on Blu-ray and DVD.
