Yesterday was the 102nd International Women’s Day - the day we celebrate all the women of the world and commemorate their achievements. It is a day for women - and men - across the world to join their voices in unison to echo the same sentiment: ‘we must all commit to end violence, rape and abuse.’
International Women’s Day events took place all over the world and ranged from fashion parades to political rallies to exchanging simple hugs and high-fives.
Let’s start by checking out how celebrities commemorated the day and encouraged equality for. A few International Women’s Day (IWD) tweets are as follows:
Yoko Ono — “You’ve heard of a woman nation? Well that’s coming, baby. What we need is the power of trust, that it’s coming.”
Richard Branson — “A day of celebration that women can - and will - transform our societies.”
Queen Rania of Jordan — “Happy International Women’s Day! Let us celebrate how far we have come and remember how much more we still have to offer IWD!”
Ricky Martin — "Mothers, sisters, granddaughters, mothers-in-aw, grandmothers, aunts, girlfriends, friends, nieces, daughters, wives - Happy International Women's Day!"
Ivanka Trump — “Happy Int’l Women’s Day! Proud to support @GirlUp and all those working towards gender equality.”
In Hollywood there are plenty of well-known feminists that fight for getting the attention all these strong women deserve.
"Instead of showing your boobs, show people your brain,” Ellen Degeneres recently stated. Her comment is aimed at helping women receive the attention they deserve.
Reese Witherspoon is also a big proponent of International Women’s Day.
Reese has supported women organizations her entire career and is at the forefront of eliminating domestic violence from our culture.
"Domestic violence is an issue that affects 1 in 3 women all over the world. Women in other countries aren't educated and have a difficult time getting to schools,” Reese stated.
Natalie Portman has a history of assisting charities to raising funds to aid small businesses in third-world countries, and especially for women. Keira Knightley is also a feminist and is very active in generating interest in the group "Women's Aid.”
Keira Knightley, along with Sir Elton John and many other stars, recently signed a letter calling for more attention on women’s safety issues. The letter contained the following startling facts:
We can’t continue to ignore the fact that women aged 15-44 are more at risk from rape and domestic violence than from cancer, car accidents, war and malaria combined… Men and women have united to stand for equality and change… We stand collectively and say ‘we won’t accept violence’.
Moving on, Mandy Moore is a force battling diseases like anemia, and educating about how it can increase the risk of contracting pneumonia during pregnancy.
“Investments in women’s health can prevent this,” states Mandy.
Lady Gaga has said she wants her pop music to be inspired by a sense of feminism.
International Woman’s Day has been gaining a lot of steam in recent years, especially with the help of all these celebrities taking a day off of other tasks to celebrate women. The IWD was celebrated in 1908 in America. In 1977, the international celebration became a UN initiative and took on much more clout.
It will be exciting to see what good place IWD can go in the future! |
