Anne Hathaway's Ex-Boyfriend Raffaello Follieri Asks For Shorter Sentence

October 15, 2008

Anne Hathaway's ex-boyfriend is seeking a shorter sentence for his criminal charges. Raffaello Follieri requested the Manhattan District Court to give him a three-year sentence rather than the maximum of five years and three months.

The lawyer for the real estate developer - who is currently facing 14 federal counts of wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy - argues that Follieri, 30, only had the best of intentions when he lied to investors about his fictional ties to the Vatican.

However, Hathaway's ex "became intoxicated with it all" after growing used to his lavish lifestyle.

Attorney Flora Edwards wrote in her motion, "Unfortunately, he lacked the resources to maintain the opulent lifestyle of his new friends."

"Even more unfortunately, he had almost unfettered access to hundreds of thousands of dollars with few controls on his spending ability, until it was too late."

Follieri pleaded guilty to his charges and has been in prison since his June arrest after failing to post the $21 million bail.

His hearing is set on October 23.
