Cameron Diaz Turns To Humor To Cope With Dad's Death

April 28, 2008 08:43 pm CDT

Cameron Diaz is using humor to cope with her father's sudden death.

The 35-year-old actress, who stars alongside Ashton Kutcher in new romantic comedy 'What Happens in Vegas', held a private screening of the movie to "have a good laugh" with her grieving friends and family following the loss of Emilio Diaz on April 15.

Cameron said in a hand-written note read out by Ashton in Los Angeles on Saturday, "Due to the loss of my father I have chosen to be with my family this weekend. But it was important for me to convey to all of you how much I love this film."

"I was fortunate to work with a group of truly gifted individuals that share the common denominator of a generous heart and wickedly sick sense of humor."

"This weekend I am screening 'What Happens in Vegas' for my family. It was a unanimous decision that we all needed to share a good laugh. After all that's why we make films like these. So people can leave behind their worries for a couple of hours. Have a good laugh. I picture all of your smiles and it makes me happy."

"Thank you for your continued support. It is much appreciated. Cameron."

Emilio passed away after a bout of flu developed into pneumonia. He was just 58 years old.

Meanwhile, Ashton has joked that it was "horrible" working with Cameron on the film.

He said, "I mean, showing up to work having to look at a good looking woman who is funny and happy to be alive and joyous and nice to people was a nightmare."

He added, "I don't think that there is anybody like her -she is maybe the only true comedic leading lady in our business right now - she really owns that craft."

Cameron is expected to return to work later this week. Production on her latest film 'My Sister's Keeper' stopped following Emilio's death.
