NBA television commentator and former basketball great Charles Barkley was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol early Wednesday.
The former NBA star was arrested in Scottsdale's Old Town in Phoenix, Arizona.
Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler said Barkley was spotted running a stop sign at about 1:30 a.m. The 45-year-old Barkley failed field sobriety tests after the officer smelled alcohol on him. Barkley declined to submit to a breath test but was given a blood test.
Barkley, who police said was cooperative, was cited and released. The police added that it is customary to release people after an arrest on suspicion of DUI.
Since retiring as a player, Barkley has had a successful career as an Emmy Award-winning color commentator for basketball. He works with Turner Network Television (TNT) as a studio pundit for its coverage of NBA games. He has also written several books and shown an interest in politics.
