Chicago, IL, United States (AHN Entertainment) - The son of International singer and actress Cher says he is grateful that his famous mother has accepted him for who he is.

Chaz Bono, who was born to Cher and late ex-husband Sonny Bono as a female named Chastity, told talk show host Oprah Winfrey Monday that his mother struggled to adapt at times to his decision to undergo gender reassignment surgery three years ago.

"The hard thing for my mom is because she is a public figure and because she has this personality of being so kind of cool about stuff and progressive, people forget that she's a parent," he said. "The truth is a lot of parents never speak to their transgendered kids again. That's not the case in my family. There's no doubt about my mother's love for me."

Bono, who promoted his new memoir "Transition: The Story of How I Became a Man" on Winfrey's show, also revealed that by Cher referring to him by his new name in a text before his appearance on the talk show was a big breakthrough for their relationship.

"She's getting better and better. She sent me a text this morning and it was really nice... She wrote in her text today 'Chaz', so that was really huge," Bono said. "She's moving in the right direction."

The 42-year-old also said he and his girlfriend of five years had to "re-learn" how to be with one another after the surgery.

"We had to really almost re-learn how to communicate and how to be around each other," Bono said. "Things had changed just me saying the same thing that I would have before with a deeper voice and more of a presence. Suddenly things didn't mean the same thing to her. And so we really had to, you know, adjust our - how we did things and relearn how to be together."

Bono's journey was also documented in "Becoming Chaz," the first film in the OWN Documentary Film Club, which will premiere Tuesday.
