Chris Hemsworth survived on a meagre 500-calorie diet a day to get in shape for his role in the Heart of the Sea.

The film, which is about the real-life disaster that inspired Moby Dick, sees the actor playing the first mate Owen Chase who is forced to survive elements of nature and starvation after being shipwrecked.

"We have to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to 5, 6, 700 calories a day, [for] a good three or four weeks and it's going to be pretty uncomfortable, but we'll be together in our misery," Hemsworth told Entertainment Tonight.

Despite director Ron Howard ensuring his actors do their rapid slimdowns healthily, Hemsworth said all he can think about was getting to the end of filming.

"I spend more time thinking about food than anything else at the moment," admitted the star, who worked out twice a day and ate eight meals a day to put on 20 pounds of muscle when filming the Marvel franchise Thor.

The actor also dished on what he would like to have once the filming ended. "All the bad stuff - pizza, hamburgers, ice cream, anything that is not on the menu - is something you have an obsession with!" he said.
