A bearded Christian Bale won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of former real-life boxer-turned addict Dicky Eklund in "The Fighter."

The 37-year-old actor faced tough competition, with John Hawkes in "Winter's Bone," Jeremy Renner in "The Town," Mark Ruffalo in "The Kids Are All Right" and Geoffrey Rush in "The King's Speech" vying for the same prize.

"Bloody, hell. A room a full of talented and inspirational people and what the hell am I doing here?" Bale said. "It's such an honor."

Before the actor began thanking those who starred with him in the film, he joked about refraining himself from controversial outbursts by poking a little fun at just-awarded Melissa Leo.

"Melissa, I'm not going to drop the f-bomb like she did. I've done that plenty."

But the actor who had lost 30 pounds for the film instead thanked his family, "Of course my wonderful wife and our little girl, who taught me more than I'll ever be a teacher."
