Los Angeles, CA, United States (Celebrity News Service) - Christina Aguilera says she was not an "angel" to her ex-husband during her marriage.

The 30-year-old "The Voice" judge, who has a 3-year-old son named Max with music executive Jordan Bratman, told W magazine that both were to blame for the demise of their marriage.

"At one time or another we were both not angels. It got to a point where our life at home was reminding me of my own childhood. I will not have my son grow up in a tension-filled home," she said.

The singer and Bratman's divorce was finalized in April.

As a child, Aguilera admitted to seeking comfort in musicals like "The Sound of Music" to escape the harsh realities of her family life, which consisted of her mother being emotionally and physically abused by her father.

"I felt caged by my childhood. And unsafe: Bad things happened in my home; there was violence. The 'Sound of Music' looked like a form of release," she explained. "I would open my bedroom window to sing out like Maria. In my own way, I'd be in those hills."

The "Beautiful" singer, who is now in a relationship with production assistant Matthew Rutler and is set to release a new single with "The Voice" colleague and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine next week, said she wanted to be true to herself even if her divorce was going to be played out in the press.

"I knew there would be a negative reaction in the press to my divorce, but I am not going to live my life because of something someone might say. That goes against everything I sing on my records. I have to be myself."

"The Voice" airs on Tuesdays on NBC.
