Country Star Gretchen Wilson Receives Her GED

May 19, 2008

Country singer Gretchen Wilson has received her General Equivalency Diploma (GED) in a ceremony Thursday, at the age of 34.

The "Redneck Woman" donned the black cap and gown as she walked across the First Baptist Church's stage in Lebanon, Tennessee almost twenty years after dropping out of ninth grade.

She cited her daughter Grace Frances Penner, born in 2000, as part of the reason why she continued her education.

She said, "This is something I promised myself a long time ago I would do. I'm sure the fact I have a little girl in school is part of it. I want to be able to help her with homework when the time comes."

Wilson enrolled in the Adult Learning Center in Wilson County last year to complete her schooling. She took the final test last month.
