Emma Stone Cast As Female Lead In New "Spider-Man" Movie

Spider-Man gets his girl again. Emma Stone has been cast as the lead in the upcoming "Spider-Man" reboot from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal and Columbia Pictures president Matt Tolmach made the announcement today that Stone will play the role of Peter Parker's love interest, Gwen Stacy.

That's right, not Mary Jane Watson as insiders expected the redhead to portray. But according to director Marc Webb ("(500) Days of Summer"), Stone is surprisingly a natural blonde. (Stacy's character was played by Bryce Dallas Howard in 2007's "Spider-Man 3.")

Parker will be played by Andrew Garfield, who currently stars in this week's #1 movie "The Social Network." "The chemistry between Andrew and Emma was stunning and made Emma the clear choice," director Webb said. "At the heart of the story of Peter Parker is not only the amazing Spider-Man, but also an ordinary teenager who is wondering what he has to do to get the girl. Andrew and Emma will bring everything audiences expect to these roles, but also make them their own."

The new "Spider-Man" film will begin production in December. It's expected to hit theaters in 3D on July 3rd, 2012.

Stone is currently starring in the hit comedy "Easy A," in theaters everywhere, and has a cameo in next year's Justin Timberlake starrer "Friends with Benefits." She'll also star in "Crazy, Stupid Love" with Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling and in "The Help," an adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's bestselling novel.
