Kate Middleton's sheer dress sold at auction for almost $126,000

London, United Kingdom (AHN Entertainment) - The see-through dress that helped Kate Middleton to catch the eye of Prince William has been sold for over $125,000. The lingerie-style dress, which was originally meant to be a skirt by designer Charlotte Todd, was auctioned off at the Kerry Taylor Auctions Passion for Fashion sale in London Thursday.

The future princess was a student at St. Andrews University in 2002 when she wore the sheer piece for a school fashion show. That was believed to be the instant when William, also a student at the university, was captivated by the brunette beauty.

Todd, 31, told People magazine that she made the dress as part of her university coursework, calling it "'The Art of Seduction,' which is quite apt. I didn't know who Kate Middleton was and I didn't put her in it. It was just pure chance!"

The dress, which cost less than $50 to produce, was sold for 78,000 pounds or $125,884 at current exchange rate to an anonymous male buyer. It was displayed along other iconic dresses worn by the females in the royal family, including some pieces worn by Princess Diana and lingerie numbers from the Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson.

Todd continued, "I'm thrilled. Everyone says that the fashion show was when the romance started and when she bagged her prince, so a small part of me will always be part of royal history. It's madness!"
