Girls Aloud Singer Cheryl Cole's Brother Spared From Jail For Attacking A Man

May 15, 2009

Cheryl Cole's brother has been spared jail despite pleading guilty to assault. The Girls Aloud beauty's older sibling, Andrew Tweedy - who admitted spraying CS gas in a man's face, temporarily blinding him, and being in possession of an offensive weapon at a hearing last month - had his 36-week prison sentence suspended for two years by Judge David Hodson and was ordered to pay $500.

According to the judge at Newcastle Crown Court, Andrew - who has previously been jailed for six years for a stabbing and four years for a mugging - has turned his life round since the drunken fight last August, due to the birth of his son.

However, his victim Lee Clark was furious at the verdict, saying: "I'm shocked Tweedy wasn't jailed."

Andrew's barrister Paul Caulfield said the 29-year-old considered himself "the black sheep of the family."

Andrew - who missed Cheryl's wedding to soccer star Ashley Cole in 2006 because he was in prison - has previously spoken about his sister's support.

He said: "I've told Cheryl she should be ashamed, but she says she'll never give up on me."

A spokesperson for Cheryl - who was convicted of assault in 2003 - refused to comment.
