Gloria Estefan Marches With Fellow Cubans In Support Of Ladies In White

March 26, 2010 Gloria Estefan, Free

Gloria Estefan has led her fellow Cubans in a protest march in Miami's Little Havana on Thursday. The multiple Grammy Award winner led the march in support of Cuba's Las Damas de Blanco, or the Ladies in White.

The Cuban-born star, along with the thousands of protesters, wore white and marched in silence to show solidarity with the opposition group, which is composed of mothers and wives of 75 dissidents in Cuba. This month marks the seventh anniversary of the Black Spring event, when the government imprisoned journalists, writers, and political rebels they thought were a threat to the revolution.

53 of them are still imprisoned, while one, named Orlando Zapata Tamayo, died after a hunger strike.

Estefan said, "This is a big message to all of them that freedom is alive and we care for them, we love them. We want them to be free."

The march followed the peaceful protest by the Las Damas de Blanco that was violently repressed by the Cuban authorities on March 17.

While the march in Miami was being held, around 20 members of the group marched again in Havana.
