Helen Mirren Cried When She Watched Old Videos Of Queen Elizabeth

September 10, 2009

Dame Helen Mirren cries when she watches old videos of Britain's Queen Elizabeth. The 64-year-old actress - who won an Academy Award for her portrayal of the monarch in 2006 film "The Queen" - has wanted to play the 83-year-old monarch since she saw a short film of her as a 12-year-old princess.

Mirren revealed: "In the footage, she's getting out of one of those enormous black cars. She'd obviously been told you get out and you put your hand out and you are polite to the man who will greet you."

"But she's doing it with such gravity and grace and dignity as a 12-year-old, and it makes me cry every time I look at it. It's beautiful."

Mirren has previously expressed a desire to film a sequel to "The Queen," which would focus on Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002.

She is quoted as saying: "'The Queen' was such an individual, idiosyncratic film. It was one of a kind. You can't repeat that. People have asked, 'Is there going to be a sequel?' Yes, let's do the golden jubilee. That would be interesting."
