Hugh Jackman Thrilled He Didn't Have To Wear Spandex To Play Wolverine

May 1, 2009

Hugh Jackman is thrilled he didn't have to wear tights to play Wolverine. The Australian actor - who reprises his role as the mutant anti-hero in new movie "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" - is relieved he didn't have to don Spandex like many other actors who have brought to life comic book characters on the big screen.

He said: "One of the blessings is that I don't have to wear Spandex. I think it's safe to say that me and yellow tights don't get on!"

In the original Marvel comic book series, Wolverine - who has powers of physical regeneration and an adamantium metal skeleton - wore a bright yellow body suit.

Jackman was required to build a muscular physique for the movie and recently admitted he pushed himself to the limit when he was training by pretending he was Wolverine.

He said: "I work out imagining I'm Wolverine. Wolverine to me is the guy that when everybody else quits, that's where he begins. I think that's why people love him."

The 40-year-old actor - who was named Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine last year - also revealed it took him a year to get in shape for the action-packed film and he had to completely overhaul his diet.

He said: "I think we've wiped out entire gene pools of chickens. To any vegetarians out there, I really apologize."
