Jake Gyllenhaal on Heath Ledger: 'I miss him as a human being'

July 28, 2015 Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ang Lee

It's been ten years since Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger starred in the Oscar nominated Brokeback Mountain and seven years since the world lost the latter to a tragic death. Gyllenhaal recently talked about his costar, who he still misses, in an interview with NPR's Terry Gross.

The Southpaw actor opened up about their friendship and the lessons he learned from Ledger on and off-screen.

Im trying to be present where I am. Im trying to have relationships that are as real as they possibly can be on a movie set, be close to people because I know that its precious, Gyllenhaal said. And I know, not only can this career end in a very short period of time and this or that can happen, but also that life is precious.

I think losing Heath and being a part of a family that was something like the movie, that movie we all made together, makes you appreciate that and hopefully moves you away from the things that really dont matter to the things that do.

The two actors, who played lovers in Ang Lee's flick, became close friends after the 2005 movie and Gyllenhaal admitted he can still feel the void Ledger's left within Hollywood.

I miss him as a human being and I miss working with him, he said, and what an unfortunate thing it is that we wont be able to see the beauty of his expression.
