Jay-Z Suing Red Sox Star David Ortiz Over Club Name

Rapper superstar Jay-Z is suing Red Sox slugger David Ortiz for allegedly stealing the name of his club 40/40. The hip-hop mogul filed a $5 million suit against the athlete and his sister Albania Ortiz for copyright infringement.

According to the documents submitted to the Manhattan federal court, Jay-Z, real name Shawn Carter, ripped off the name of his 40/40 Club for their own Forty-Forty nightclub in their native Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, which they opened last year.

The papers said that included photos of the player attending an All-Star Game party at Jay-Z's flagship 40/40 Club on West 25th Street in 2008 prove that Ortiz's naming of his own Forty-Forty club can't be a coincidence.

He is suing for trademark infringement, unjust enrichment, and false designation of sponsorship. Jay-Z is also charging Ortiz and his sister of cybersquatting for running a Spanish-language Website at www.fortyforty.net, according to the New York Post.

Jay-Z's 40/40 Club, named after players who have stolen 40 bases and hit 40 home runs in a season, has branches in Tokyo, Atlantic City, among other cities.
