Joan Rivers leaves audience gasping over Elizabeth Taylor joke

New York City, NY, United States (AHN Entertainment) - Joan Rivers is known for taking jabs at celebrities with her jokes, but many say she has gone too far with one she made recently about the late Elizabeth Taylor.

On the night the Hollywood actress died, Rivers went onstage and unleashed a joke that left the audience gasping.

"Debbie Reynolds keeps carrying on that she and Elizabeth Taylor were such good friends," Rivers told the audience. "Elizabeth Taylor's spinning in her grave so fast she's turning into a smoothie."

For years, Taylor was famously accused of stealing Reynolds' husband and singer Eddie Fisher.

"Half of them laughed, half of them gasped," Rivers told USA Today.

The legendary comedienne, whose reality show with her daughter, Melissa, has been renewed by WE tv for a second season, said she equates the timely, touchy joke to what she's delivered about the disaster in Japan.

"My God, we all know it's horrible, surprise. We all know that. So let's do something funny and that makes it a little easier and now we can go and deal with it."

Rivers insisted that Taylor was never offended by her jokes through the years. She remembered what Taylor once told her "It doesn't get me where I live."

As for offending people, Riverstook to Twitter to defend herself last week by saying, "That's what comedians do!!! We react to tragedy by making jokes to help people in tough times feel better through laughter."
