John Mayer insists he is single. The singer - who was recently romantically linked with a cocktail waitress and spotted kissing a fan - claims he is always honest about his relationship status.

He explained: "If I had a girlfriend, she would be incredibly offended by me saying, 'I don't have a girlfriend,' so that's the proof."

"I can say I'm not with anybody. That's a death wish if you are with a woman, if you go home and you've said that you're not with anybody, you'll take a lashing for the next three weeks."

Despite his claims, John - who split with Jennifer Aniston in March after a year-long romance - was reportedly seen getting close to aspiring actress Scheana Marie Jancan at a Beverly Hills lounge where she was waitressing.

A source said: "Scheana was shocked and thrilled when John asked her out. She has always thought he was hot, and she said yes right away, writing down her cell phone number on a napkin. They flirted the whole time, and he told her she was cute."

"She's been hanging out at his home a lot. There is always food and beer around. Scheana said she has loads of fun there."
