John Mayer Disses "Guitar Hero" Fans

June 5, 2008

Pop rock singer-songwriter John Mayer recently told Rolling Stone that he is not a fan of the popular video game "Guitar Hero."

Mayer said the game, which allows players to simulate the playing of rock music, makes it too easy for people to think they are good at playing the guitar.

"Guitar Hero was devised to bring the guitar-playing experience to the masses without them having to put anything into it," he said.

Mayer said playing the game can't compare to the real thing.

"And having done both, there's nothing like really playing guitar. I mean, what would you rather drive, a Ferrari or one of those amusement-park cars on a track?" he said.

Luckily, the success of the game does not depend on Mayer's opinion - the franchise has already earned over $1 billion since its release in 2005.
