Joke About Prince Charles' Wife Camilla's Appearance Causes Controversy

December 12, 2008

A joke about the appearance of Britain's Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, caused controversy at this year's Royal Variety Performance.

Irish comedian Graham Norton made the quip at the show - which was attended by Camilla and her husband Prince Charles - after a performance by raunchy girl group Pussycat Dolls.

He said: "And there you have the Pussycat Dolls singing to the prince, 'Don't 'cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?'"

However, a spokesperson for the BBC, who will broadcast the show next Wednesday, insisted it was "light-hearted banter" and that "no offense was meant" to Camilla. The BBC also confirmed the segment will be included in the broadcasted performance.

Meanwhile, "Bleeding Love" singer Leona Lewis was thrilled to meet Prince Charles when he and Camilla arrived for the show at the London Palladium.

A source said: "He clearly made an impression because she was wearing a big grin all night."

The Royal Variety Performance also included appearances from Take That, comedian Jimmy Car, veteran performer Sir Cliff Richard, "Warwick Avenue" singer Duffy and the cast of musical "The Lion King."
