It is believed that Katie Holmes actually filed for divorce in New York because this state doesn't allow joint custody over a child. Therefore, people think that Katie might have done this in order to get sole custody of Suri.

It is actually a fact that Katie placed "irreconcilable differences" as a reason for filing the divorce but there's reason to note that this difference might as well be Tom's religion, Scientology.
