Kiefer Sutherland Claims His Experience In Prison Helped Him Quit Smoking

November 18, 2008

Kiefer Sutherland claims being in prison helped him quit smoking. The "24" star - who was jailed for 48 days last December for driving under the influence of alcohol - says although his time behind bars was grueling, it gave him the opportunity to kick his nicotine habit.

He said: "My drinking was not a daily thing, so it wasn't an issue. And, oddly enough, neither was the smoking."

"I was very glad to know that I could quit. And one day soon I will."

The 41-year-old actor also revealed he endured glaring light in his cell and could not escape the constant surveillance.

He said: "The lights never go out. You can't cover anything. You can't even put your head under a blanket. All the cells have cameras in them."

Kiefer - who spent Christmas, New Year's Eve and his birthday, December 21, behind bars - also says the promise of privacy was broken as soon as he entered the facility.

He added to Men's Vogue magazine: "I was told, you know, 'You'll have your own cell.' But I didn't for the first two or three weeks."

"I had a cell mate. He got out - but not for long. He came back in pretty quick."
