Leona Lewis' Attacker Detained Under The Mental Health Act

December 15, 2009

Leona Lewis' attacker has been detained under the Mental Health Act. 29-year-old Peter Kowalczyk punched the "X Factor" champ during her book signing in London on October 14.

Kowalczyk, a schizophrenic, hit the left side of the 24-year-old "Bleeding Love" hitmaker's face with his right fist as she signed his copy of her book. He pleaded guilty to common assault.

Lewis' statement was read by prosecutor Melanie Lee, saying she "feel completely devastated by this attack."

"Now I am very frightened about going out in public and I don't know where the next attack will come from and if this will be more serious than what has just happened."

Judge Howard Riddle ordered Kowalczyck to remain in the hospital for an indeterminate period under section 37, or the Mental Health Act of the U.K.
