Alan Cumming is joining the cast of the upcoming Broadway musical "Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark." The "Spy Kids" actor will play the villain Norman Osborn, a.ka. Green Goblin, in the stage project.

Cumming will play the role first portrayed by Willem Dafoe in the film version in 2002.

Director Julie Taymor explained to BBC why they chose the actor, saying, "He has such range and such charisma as a performer that I feel his Green Goblin will bring many surprises that will move and entertain us."

The superhero-themed musical's plot will include the story of his origins as well as new materials. It will also star Evan Rachel Wood as Peter Parker's girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson, and will feature a score by U2's Bono and The Edge.

Preview performances will kick off on February 25 at the Hilton Theater.
