Olympian Michael Phelps has a big splash to make: he is starting a swimming foundation to encourage the sport's growth.

The 23-year-old 8-time gold medalist in the recently concluded Beijing Summer Olympics told Today Show host Matt Lauer that he plans to travel to eight U.S. cities, hoping to promote swimming. He will be using part of the $1 million bonus, which he earned from Speedo for tying Mark Spitz' seven gold medals, to start the foundation.

No other details were made clear.

Phelps holds the record for the most gold medals won at a single Olympics. He won 8 at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, making his gold medal total to 14.
