Madonna Still Hopes To Adopt Mercy

April 13, 2009

Madonna is still hoping to adopt her second child from Malawi. The singer says she wants 4-year-old Mercy James to grow up in a "loving family environment," which she can provide.

Last week, Madonna was denied by a Malawian judge to adopt the girl from the orphanage because she lacks residency requirement, which required potential adopted parents to reside in the nation for one year before adopting. She successfully adopted son David from the same orphanage in 2006, amidst controversy.

The music icon has lodged an appeal in another bid to adopt Mercy.

The pop superstar, 50, said in an email interview with Malawi's The Nation newspaper, "I want to provide Mercy with a home, a loving family environment and the best education and health care possible. And it's my hope that she like David, will one day return to Malawi and help the people of their country."

She added that she has been advised not to discuss the pending appeal publicly, but she appreciates the support she's getting from her friends and the people of Malawi.
