Martha Stewart becomes a grandma, daughter Alexis welcomes child via surrogate

March 11, 2011 Martha Stewart

Martha Stewart has become a grandmother. The domestic diva's only daughter, Alexis, has welcomed daughter of her own she named Jude, who was born via gestational carrier on Tuesday.

Alexis, 45, has been open about wanting to conceive a child, even spending more than $20,000 a month on fertility treatments. It was previously reported that she had been expecting a baby through a surrogate mother, but her camp refused to comment on the rumor.

But on Thursday, Alexis, who had been divorced from husband John R. Cuti, excitedly announced the news on her radio show "Whatever with Alexis & Jennifer."

"Martha is going to be called, 'Martha,'" she said via People magazine. "She seemed to have no problem with it… I was like, 'Do you really want to be 'grandma'? I don't like the term grandma!"

The home guru, who was just as eager to have a granddaughter, wasted no time in spoiling Jude.

Alexis continued, "She was born at one in the morning… and [Martha] brings this huge box from Bergdorf [Goodman]. I open it up and I look inside and it's full of baby clothes, all with embroidery, and I'm like, 'Wow, I guess I'm going to be allowed to buy myself something pretty nice because all this stuff's going back!'"

"If the kid can't see it, why the 100-dollar [clothes]?" she reasoned out. "Only books, child appropriate or whatever: that's the only thing that I want. No toys please!"

Alexis also refused to give the baby's measurement, joking, "You're not getting her weight and length. It's rude!"
