Matt Damon speaks about the 1997 gay rumor

December 15, 2012 Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Anderson Cooper, Elton John

Actor Matt Damon has spoken about the gay rumors that were sparked after He and Ben Affleck featured as two friends in 1997’s “Good Will Hunting”. Now years have really passed and Damon had never addressed the rumors.

The 42-year old actor spoke to Playboy about the rumor saying he had reasons why he didn’t address the rumor then. He said “I never denied those rumors. I was offended and didn’t want to offend my friends who were gay, as if being gay were some kind of disease. It put me in a weird position in that sense”.

The “Contagion” actor said at the time, he was happy that his gay friends were gay and was just growing tolerance towards homosexual people. He said the fact that some famous people lie Anderson Cooper and Ellen DeGereres come out so beautifully and powerfully makes it a big deal and now no one cares if one is gay or not.

Damon spoke about Liberace who died before he could be accepted because of his sexuality. He said “If Liberace was alive today, everybody would love his music and nobody would care what he did in his private life. Like Elton John”.

To avoid any more rumors, Damon turned down an offer to feature in a gay cowboy movie “Brokeback Mountain”, because he had already done a gay movie called “The Talented Mr. Ripley”.
