Meg Ryan Says Adopting Her Daughter Daisy Was Like A Metaphysical Kind Of Labor

September 12, 2008

Meg Ryan says adopting her daughter was like a "metaphysical kind of labor." "The Women" actress - who adopted Daisy True, now three, from China in 2006 - admits the process has many similarities to natural birth, with all the same emotions.

Meg, who also has a 16-year-old son Jack Henry with ex-husband Dennis Quaid, said: "It's such a deliberate act, this adoption, as opposed to getting pregnant sometimes. You have to be very, very awake."

"When I first met Daisy, she had tons and tons of clothes on her, Teletubbies long underwear, another layer, then this electric blue sweater. She was red-faced, screaming and crying."

"She checked me out and then she went to sleep. The next six to eight hours, she'd wake up and be very afraid and then she'd cry and then relax and play with you. I'd do the same thing. Just get really afraid, then really expanded. It was this metaphysical kind of labor, this crazy meeting."

Meg, 46, also denied that she somehow "saved" Daisy from her life in China, insisting she always knew she was meant to be a mother to the tot.

She added to the Los Angeles Times newspaper: "I just saw that face and I knew we were just related. Adoption taught me a lot about any expectations you have in life. Just toss them away. Throw them out."
