Nicolas Cage's stolen Superman comic book found after 10 years
|April 12, 2011 Nicolas Cage, 10 Years|
Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN Entertainment) - Nicolas Cage's stolen Superman comic book has been found after 10 years. The 47-year-old actor's authentic copy of the 1938 classic Action Comics#1, in which the Man of Steel was introduced, was reported stolen in 2000, but was discovered in a San Fernando Valley storage locker just last month.
The comic book is estimated to have a value of \$1 million. It was one of a partial collection of vintage comic books stolen from his L.A. home.
It remained missing until last man when a man, who refused to be identified, found it in a San Fernando Valley storage locker. The man bought the locker's contents through Riverside-based American Auctioneers.
He turned to American Auctioneers co-owner Dan Dotson, who in turn arranged a meeting between the man and Simi Valley collectibles expert Mark Balelo earlier this month.
The comic book was authenticated and handed over to the Los Angeles Police Department, but not before Balelo took photographs of the book and sent it to New York comic book dealer Stephen Fishler, who had sold the copy to Cage.
Balelo said to Ventura County Star, "Stephen Fishler is extremely knowledgeable. He compared the markings to photographs and it was the one he sold to Nicolas Cage 11 years ago.
Police Det. Donald Hrycyk believed that the comic book was the same one stolen from the actor and seized it as evidence.
As Cage received an insurance payout for the stolen comic book, it is still not known whether he will regain legal title. Hrycyk said that the matter is between Cage and the insurance company.
Cage, who named his 5-year-old son Kal-El, the birth name of Superman, was cast to play Superman in the 1990s, but the project fell through. He auctioned off a collection of 400 vintage comic books for more than \$1.6 million in 2002.
