Photographer Says Princess Diana "Was Not A Great Beauty"

March 10, 2009

A leading photographer says Britain's Princess Diana was "not a great beauty." David Bailey - who has taken pictures of some of the world's most famous faces - thinks the late princess was not as attractive as people claimed she was.

He said: "I mean she was a nice girl, she came to my studio a few times and she was a pleasant enough woman, but a great beauty she wasn't."

The 71-year-old photographer also criticized Diana's former husband Prince Charles, claiming he didn't understand why the royal was once hailed as "the world's most eligible bachelor."

Speaking on British TV documentary "Brush With Fame," Bailey said: "I remember when they used the word 'handsome' to describe Prince Charles, but that stretched the imagination - he looked like a banjo player in Appalachia."

He added: "There goes my knighthood."

British TV viewers can watch David's interview on "Brush With Fame: David Bailey" on Sky Arts 1 at 7.30pm tomorrow.
