Pink Says A Teenage Fan's Rape Ordeal Stopped Her From Quitting Music

September 1, 2008

Pink says a 13-year-old fan's rape ordeal stopped her from quitting music. The singer received a harrowing letter from the teenager revealing how her grandfather had sexually abused her following the death of her mother.

The fan, who also described how her grandfather had been raping her mother before her passing, urged the star to "never stop" because her music gave her a reason to live.

Pink, real name Alecia Moore, said: "I remember being in Paris and talking about my childhood, my parents divorcing and I started crying during an interview. I thought I was over music and I couldn't take any more. But then, not long after, I got a letter from this girl saying her grandfather was raping her."

"I get chills even talking about it. I have 50 of the most insanely awful letters that remind me that this job isn't about me."

Pink insists she doesn't care if people criticize her songs because they have a positive effect on many listeners.

She added to Britain's The Sun newspaper: "It's crazy. Some people may say the new songs are heartache b***-s**t but somebody out there is going to get through their pain a little easier, and that makes me feel better."
