The former police chief who has been convicted of snooping around the home of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick's surrogate mother has been sentenced to two years and eight months in jail.

Former Martins Ferry Police Chief Barry Carpenter was taken into custody and placed in the Belmont County jail following the sentencing, which was first reported by local affiliate WTRF.

Carpenter resigned from his post weeks after his conviction on November 23 for receiving stolen property, theft in an office and tampering with evidence in connection with Michelle Ross' house break-in in June.

His attorney said they will appeal the conviction of theft in an office and receiving stolen property.

It was learned that Carpenter, along with Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack, broke into Ross' home seeking information that they could sell to a tabloid. The paper turned them into authorities after learning how the material was obtained.

Ross gave birth during the same month to the Hollywood power couple's twin girls. She was not home at the time of the incident, but she testified in court, saying she discovered several items misplaced when she returned from the hospital.

Among the items misplaced are a plaster cast of her belly, various surrogate documents, and missing ultrasound pictures.

Dojack is scheduled to stand trial on similar charges in January.
