Prince Charles Didn't Believe In Monarchy

August 7, 2009

Britain's Prince Charles "didn't believe in" the monarchy until 1977, a new book has claimed. In his new book, "Me: The Authorized Biography," Byron Rogers claims the royal couldn't see a future for his family until he saw how the public embraced his mother Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee.

Rogers - who worked as the royal's speech writer in the 1980s - said Charles "confided" his secret "within" seconds of meeting him.

Rogers also joked about the prince's penchant for dull monologues, which began with lines like: "I don't think it's generally known that Britain is self-sufficient in blackcurrants ..."

He also reflects on the day he introduced Charles to his mother, who was shocked when the prince complimented her son.

Rogers wrote: "Charles said, 'You have a clever son'. And she, much taken aback, replies: 'Do you think so?'"

The tome also contains Rogers' recollections of Charles' 1981 wedding to Lady Diana Spencer.

Surprisingly, most of his attention is focused on Princess Margaret, who he observed sulking at the ball prior to the ceremony.

Rogers said: "Saw Princess Margaret, looking upset, sat on the stairs being comforted by the Archbishop of Canterbury in gaiters."
