Prince Charles Meets With A Soldier Who Was "Lucky" To Be Alive

December 10, 2008

Britain's Prince Charles has met a soldier who said he was "lucky" to be alive after he was injured in the line of duty.

The royal spoke to Mike Goody, 23, of Littlehampton, Sussex, during a visit to the Royal Center for Defense Medicine Selly Oak hospital in Birmingham, where the senior aircraftman is being treated for a foot injury.

The RAF infantryman was trapped under the vehicle he was driving after sustaining injuries in an explosion in Afghanistan in October and says he is thankful to have gotten out alive.

He told Charles: "We were coming back into camp, doing some drills, we didn't find anything. It was a very well hidden explosive we hit."

"Looking at the photographs, I know I should not be here. I am very lucky."

Despite the accident, Mike says he is hoping to return to Afghanistan when he recovers. The prince also met two founders of TroopAid, which sends toiletries and clothing to injured soldiers.

The Solihul-based charity also ensure troops that arrive at the hospital are given toothpaste, shaving kits and clothing.

TroopAid chairman Albert Sutton said Prince Charles' patronage made a "tremendous difference."
