Prince Charles Trying To Convince Brazilian Diplomats To Support England's Bid To Host 2018 Soccer World Cup

March 13, 2009

Britain's Prince Charles is trying to convince Brazilian diplomats to support England's bid to host the 2018 soccer World Cup. The 60-year-old royal reportedly cornered Ricardo Teixieria, the head of the Brazilian Football Association, at a garden party hosted by the British Ambassador to Brazil in Brasilia on Wednesday night.

Charles spoke passionately about England's desire to host the prestigious event and later repeated his spiel to Brazilian sport minister Orlando Silva de Jesus Junior.

The prince traveled to Rio de Janeiro Thursday where he was expected to raise the subject again with the Governor of Rio.

Brazil will host the 2014 World Cup and has influence over which nation wins the 2018 bid. To guarantee Brazil's vote, England is likely to support the South American country's bid for the 2016 Olympics. Britain will host the 2012 games.

England has not hosted the World Cup since it won the tournament in 1966. The United Kingdom's multi-million pound bid to host the 2006 competition infamously failed after "gentlemen's agreements" saw Germany receive UEFA backing.

Charles is in Brazil to raise awareness of climate change and deforestation. His son Prince William is also a vocal supporter of the 2018 World Cup bid.
